Magazine Cover

Which character would make it onto the cover of a magazine?  Choose a character that you believe serves an essential role in the book.  Find an image online that best represents what you believe that character to look like in the book.  Think about the character's accomplishments and major attributions to the story.  Then, you will create an actual magazine cover and write up a 200 word article explaining their contribution the the Ugly/Pretty society.

Please utilize the following website to create the magazine cover:
www.fototrix.com

After you have created the magazine cover, save it to your computer, and then upload it to your Blogger webpage. Below the image, write your article that would be present within the magazine (if it were real).

The article must contain:
  • Accurate Information from the Novel
  • At least 200 Words
  • Direct Reference to One Character
  • One Quote from the Book
  • Think of Who, What, When, Where, and Why as you write!

See my example below.

Mrs. Carn's Example:

Scientist may have made a genetic breakthrough that affects millions!  A woman by the name of Maddie has suffered greatly and sacrificed a lot in the past decade all in hopes of finding an answer.  This past month…she may have finally found it!  After running away from the Pretty society and reversing her own surgery, it was her hope to leak out information about lesions found on the human brain and ultimately find a cure.  Now, with the help of Tally Youngblood she is closer than ever in finding a safe way to rid humans of this controlling disease – placed there by those of Special Circumstances.  People know and now they want answers!  Why the lesions?  What are the effects?  Can we be cured?  Maddie plans on studying and working on Tally Youngblood to get some answers.  Tally has gone through the surgery and now she will be the test dummy for the doctor.  This lesion changes your thinking and makes you extremely vulnerable.  Those affected have no original ideas and become conformists.  “It’s almost like you have turned robotic,” claims Maddie.  Tally will help us to reach the answers that we need.  Scientific American will continue to find this story and keep you posted on the most recent results.

Imagery

Pick a scene from the book, Uglies, and depict it visually and within writing on your blog.  Find an image online that closely represents what you imagined the Smoke, Rusty Ruins, New Pretty Town, Uglyville, Special Circumstances, etc. to look like as you read.

After you find an image THEN I would like you to write a descriptive paragraph (as a character – no need to tell me who) describing that place.  Be sure to incorporate imagery within your paragraph.  Remember: Imagery means that you are incorporating all of your senses; sight, touch, smell, taste, and hear.  I should see each of these five senses incorporated into your paragraph (major points).  Your paragraph should be no less than eight sentences.  Your goal is to create an image in the readers’ mind.

Mrs. Carn’s Example:

There is a chill in the air as I walk through the Rusty Ruins.  The silence is almost deafening until I am shaken by the sounds of metal and glass falling in the distance.  There is a coat of dust all over everything and I wonder, “Is it really dust or residue from a war that once happened on this land?” – either way it leaves my mouth feeling dry and gritty.  I am so thirsty and yet there isn’t one source of water anywhere in this decrepit city.  Cars are overturned, windows smashed, buildings burned – everything around me crumbling and falling apart.  What was this town like when it was all put together?  I find myself tripping and my shoes becoming tattered as I walk over the sharp pieces on the road – debris is everywhere and it is hard to miss.  The cars are not running and yet there is a faint stench of oil in the air…and also….death.  This is no place that I want to be for very long but it certainly is fascinating.  Life was once here, but now it is gone.

Post Secret

Post Secret is a current blog out on the web that allows people to post secrets on the blog anonymously.  I would like for you to choose a character and post a secret. However, I would like for you to write the secret on a picture and post it onto your blog.  YOU DO NOT HAVE TO SAY WHO THE SECRET IS FROM.  Actually, find someone to go to your blog and guess who is stating the secret.  You can reveal later (in a comment box) whether or not they are correct.

Here is my secret message...who do you think it's from?

Dystopia/Utopia

1.What is a dystopia? Give me a definition.

2. What makes the book Uglies a dystopian novel?  Explain thoroughly in at least five sentences.

2. What is a utopia?  Give me a definition.

3. Give me a picture of what your "utopia" might look like.

4. Explain to me in detail what you visualize for your own utopia.  NOT just the physical aspects but how your world would exist. (Six Sentences)

Mrs. Carn's Example

My utopia or desirable world to live in would definitely begin with a beach. I would definitely love to wake up every single morning to the sound and feeling of the ocean.  In my world people would be healthy and live off the land.  We wouldn't be consumed by the media or this pre-packaged consumer world. People would treat each other with love and respect and be willing to help each other out in various ways.  Society would be out to better themselves, each other, and the world.  We would take time for ourselves and take care of our bodies and minds.  There would be more hours in the day to spend with the ones we loved.  Most importantly - we would not take things for granted.  Life would be good.

Interior Design

What do you think the various settings in the book may look like?  What do you envision when reading the book?  For this blog, I would like you to consider one setting (such as the party towers, dorms, David's parent's house, etc.) and create an interior design board to represent that environment.  You must support your design with at least one quote from the book that explains or gives information about the setting.

Directions: Create the design board with at least 20 items, write a short paragraph (at least five sentences) explaining your board, and include a quote from the book to support your design choices.

Please use the following website: www.olioboard.com

Mrs. Carn's Example:

When Tally first went to David's parent's house she said that it was, "unlike any other in the Smoke.  It was like a standard crumbly home, filled with impractical objects.  A marble statuette stood in one corner, and rich rugs had been hung on the walls, lending their colors to the light in the room, softening the edges of everything."  In my design board, I tried to add the elements that Tally described.  I included a lot of ornate and interesting items because Maddy and Az seem like very unique and eccentric people.  I would imagine their home to look much like what I pictured above.  I imagine it to be one of those homes where you just keep looking at everything in it with amazement and/or wonder.

Poetry

Please go to the MOODLE page and download the "30 Days of Poetry" document.
Pick one of the poem formats to write.
Then...  For this blog, I would like you to write a poem as if you were one of the characters in the book.  Be sure to explain who is the character writing the poem and what type of poem you chose.  Then either place the poem onto a picture or include a picture onto your blog.
